Insight from English I Students

21st Century Romeo and Juliet
From the perspective of either Romeo or Juliet, write about the feelings he/she must be having about their forbidden love, their family feud, or their plan to marry without permission. Be sure to incorporate class discussions, the rules of marriage from the time, and the thoughts of you as a 21st Century teenager.

  2. I, Romeo, feel like my parents are being selfish and would rather have their own happiness than have me be happy. I don't even understand why our families have been fighting for so long. I just know that we are not supposed to like them. I am nervous about our secret wedding, because if someone sees or hears us they will tell our parents, and our parents might disown us or something.

As a 21st century teenager, I wouldn't be happy if my parents wouldn't let me date or marry a person I wanted to.

    1. How would your parents likely forbid you to date or marry someone in today's age? How is it different from Shakespeare's time? How is it similar?

      Delete
    2. All they could do is tell me that I couldn't but they couldn't legally stop me. In Shakespeare's time, it would be illegal without your parents permission until you were 14.

  3. Juliet-

How, how, how can we get this to work? Steal a car maybe, no that won't work, we'd probably get caught. If only our families would get along, or just let us be, not make us part of this feud. Don't they know that love over runs hatred? The only way for us to work is to hide money, sneak out, and run away to some where, anywhere and get married, just be gone with all this be done. I know it wouldn't work tho, we would get caught somehow in some way we would get caught.. So young, where could we possibly get married that wouldn't turn us in? I must get married to him soon, before I have to marry Paris, after that I have no choice, no chance to get away, to get to marry with my dear Romeo. Oh, if only, if only this were more simple, if only there weren't these laws and rules. If only there was no feud, if only everything, was all what I want it to be.

    1. Nice job of showing the frantic nature of Juliet's thoughts. How did the rules of marriage we talked about in class raise even more concern for Juliet?

  4. I, Juliet Capulet, love my Romeo Montague and I wish our family weren't enemies. Our families hatred toward each other is making out love towards each other nearly impossible. I have loved him since day one, but hate sneaking around to be with him. All I want is to be able to spend my all day, everyday with him. If our families would agree to our love we wouldn't have to have a secret marriage. Instead we had to sneak away to get married. I am very proud that I got to take him last name though. What can I do to have my families approval? Mother and Father, please approve the love I have for my dearest Romeo.

    1. Did Juliet take his last name? Why is Juliet so sure she'll never have her parents' approval? What could be another plan she might use to get what she wants?

  5. I think that our forbidden love is very dangerous but i do think that Romeo is my true love. I know that if they caught Romeo and me together then he will be killed and i will get in a lot of trouble. I really think that, even though it is very dangerous, we should get married then we can be together. As long as one of us changes our name we should be fine? I know that Romeo is my soul mate and that it would be hard to live without him. I also don't get why he is so hated by my family. What did he ever do but be born a Montague? I feel happy that i know him but i also am scared that i will lose him. I hope that one day we can live together without having that fear of losing each other. I know that one day we will be able to have a happy life together without being hated.

    1. Romeo and Juliet spend a lot of time considering the importance of names and even talk of the great importance we put on these names that really have no significance. Considering our current traditions of the woman taking the last name of her husband, why do we hold so tightly that custom? Why does society encourage this? Why isn't it vice-versa?

  6. I love Juliet and I can't let her go. I will do anything for her, even if that means losing my life. I can't believe she is my enemy. I, Romeo, am risking his life by marrying her without permission. I wasn't given permission by Juliet's parents and could get into trouble and even risk her life........As a 21st Century teenager, falling in love happens often around me. People will fall in love and then get hurt from a break up.

    1. Do you think Romeo's love is comparable to the love you see in our hallways? Is there a deeper connection between Romeo and Juliet? Or is the love at first sight significant in showing that their love is merely infatuation or lust?

      Delete
    2. Romeo's love is far more superior to the love in our hallways. For Romeo and Juliet's love was pretty much infatuation. They pretty much were attracted to each other pretty quick.

  7. I, Juliet, am in love with Romeo. I wish he wasn't a Montague. If he had any other last name, the marriage would be easy and we could be together forever. In my dreams I imagine marring him and our families getting along. If only our parents weren't in a huge family feud. No matter what it takes I will marry Romeo even though there is no permission. Besides, if I don't get married soon I might never get married.

    1. Good point about the marrying soon, but remember Paris has already put in a word for request for Juliet's hand when Lord Capulet deems it appropriate. Being that Juliet is sort of a "Daddy's girl", how do you think she could marry Romeo without his approval? Think about situations where this happens in today's society? Is it more socially acceptable today to rebel against parents' wishes?

  8. My feelings for Juliet are I like her.I don't like our little family war between our families.I think it is pretty stupid.I want to marry her so I am gonna marry her soon.I just won't tell my family. But if we get split up then I would kill myself.I don't want to live without her.I wonder why we can't just all get along. If our families could get along things would be way easier.

    1. What are some conflict resolutions that you feel the Capulets and Montagues might use to resolve the issue?

  9. Romeo doesn't like the that he cant be with Juliet. He don't like the feud because two people have already died over it. Now he probably doesn't think that marrying would be a very good idea. He hates the idea of having to be dead to be together. He feels that the feud needs to be over with and the Montegue's and the Capulet's should just get along.

    1. I agree that Romeo probably has his doubts about some of the solutions he came up with, but what else could he do to solve the conflict? What about Juliet?

    2. Romeo could try to make the Capulet's and the Montegue's get along. Juliet doesn't like that she can't be with Romeo. She wishes the feud was over and that their families would get along. She wishes that Mercutio and Tybalt wouldn't have died. She doesn't like that Romeo got banished from the city. She doesn't want to marry Paris.

  10. I am Juliet. I am so upset that the person i have fallen in love with is the enemy of my family. But i don't care. The heart wants what the heart wants. I am going to marry Romeo. Maybe it with bring our feuding families together. I know it is normal for my father to be planning my husband right now, which he is. But i am getting married, without him knowing. Right now as Brooke, im thinking, what the heck. Im gonna marry who i want to marry. Sure, it'd be cool if my mom and dad liked them but that's tough.

    1. I like that you think about how your parents approval would help matters, but also how you show independence in saying things wouldn't change your feelings. Do you think this is how Juliet feels about parents' approval? Would she have the option of disobeying her family without dire repercussions?

  11. Felipe:Romeo want's to marry Juliet and they are both excited and happy about it.They want to get married without his parents knowing it.He is afraid that someone might find out that they are getting married because each others parents hate each other. He is feeling warm and fuzzy inside about that he is marrying the love of his life. And he is happy about the marriage and he said that if Juliet dies he will die too because he loves her a lot.

    1. While Romeo may be excited to be married to Juliet, he definitely has jitters about people outside their close circle finding out. What do you suppose it would be like to have such an important secret and have to keep it from those you love?

  12. i am feeling depressed and having suicidal thoughts because i am forbidden to marry the girl i love, her name is Juliet. She's a Capulet and im a Montuegue our families hate each other. We see each other secretly but what if i get caught? What would happen to us? i rather die if i can't even have my Juliet.

    1. In thinking about Romeo's dedication to Juliet, would you classify this as infatuation, lust, or love? Remember they only just met, they don't really know each other or each other's interests, and they don't really know each other's family and friends support groups. Would all of these considerations change your thoughts about the feelings they must be feeling?

  13. I romeo feel like my Family is being stupid and selfish and are worrying about me instead of there own life. They are also make me depressed and having suicidal thoughts. They make me feel like im in a barrier and cant get out.

    1. I agree that Romeo feels the intervention he is experiencing makes him resent his family and friends more, but how do you suppose this might play out at the end? Think of the boy who cried wolf...will someone be there for Romeo when he is in dire need after he has continuously pushed everyone away, even Friar Lawrence?

  14. I think that getting married with out their families permission and that the families hate each other is bad because when the families find out the families are going to get mad and they could get in a huge fight between the two families. I also think that with the rules of marriage will affect what will happen when the families find out. Because the Juliet's father did not pick Romeo to be Juliet's husband. I think that the feud between the families is going to get worse and some people people are going to get worse. I

    1. While you raise some valid concerns, you failed to integrate first-person point of view from either Romeo or Juliet. How do you think the rules of marriage will help Juliet or hurt Romeo? What could be done because of the marriage being held in secret without parents' permission?

  15. I feel happy yet doubtful, free yet strained, having fallen in love with young lady Juliet, her family won't accept it, neither will mine. I cant be with her, yet I must. I cannot part with love for love is forever in me. I live to love and die of it if unsatisfied. who ells could quench my soul of its longing. no one but she.

    1. You capture Romeo's intense feelings for Juliet. I wonder if he has these strong feelings a bit too soon for it to be "true" love. What are your thoughts? How do you think her parents will respond to his love? His parents?

    2. I believe the parents will not understand the love of the couple they will do something that will keep the two away. if they find out that the couple has wed, they will probably kill their children

  16. I am happy where I am, nothing similar like this has happened yet in my life. Juliet, unfortunately, has to put up with her parents lectures and what THEY think is best for her. Not much has changed in parenthood...just more ignorance.

    1. I agree that the rules of parenthood haven't drastically changed since the times of Shakespeare, but what of the ignorance remark? How does ignorance play a role in today's families and parental roles?

  17. Oh, why must thou be so difficult. How will I keep Juliet happy? What will my parents think of my choice? What will Juliet's family think? This will be very difficult.

    1. The questions capture Romeo's feelings, but you need to develop this further to include some thought as to how his/her feelings might clash with their parents' and how that clash may impact their relationships. What are your thoughts on being in this situation as a 21st Century teenager? How might your parents react differently/similarly?

    1. Provide some details here. Why do you view the Montagues as more relaxed? Also, take on the first-person persona...write your post from the perspective of either Romeo or Juliet. How might it change your perception should you take on Juliet's persona? Do you think she realizes her parents are far more strict than Romeo's?

  19. Romeo: I feel as if my forbidden love with my dear Juliet is not fair because Juliet's parents know that we love each other but don't care for her happiness but theirs and will have her get married with Paris but I will not let her parents stop us from loving or marrying and I feel at least a bit more lucky than my love because her parents can't allow her to love who she wants and at least my parents let me love who I want to love, they stay out of my business, and they understand. I feel that the family feud in between my family and hers is quite absurd because it is this family feud started a long time ago and doesn't seem to have an end and if Juliet and I love each other, that won't stop us. I plan to marry my love in secrecy so no matter what we will not part until death. I do feel as if my love knows that her parents are a lot more strict than my parents because she know that my parents only care if I'm happy with the I love
