Parent-Child Relationships in Romeo and Juliet

In Act III, we saw Juliet openly disobey both Lord and Lady Capulet. She clearly stated she would not marry Paris, bringing a fit of rage to her father. We have all experienced those times when we didn't wholeheartedly agree with our parents, and from the looks of Romeo and Juliet, this feeling and the events that often arise from the dissent were even typical in Shakespeare's time. Yesterday, we discussed Shakespeare's purpose in creating this great argument and the tense feelings surrounding Juliet's situation as a means to make the situation feel more urgent and more dire. We discussed how this creates more sympathy for both Romeo and Juliet, as well as helps to build climatic action.

Discuss the relationships between parents and children in Romeo and Juliet. How do Romeo and Juliet interact with their parents? Are they rebellious, in the modern sense? How do their parents feel about them? Consider examples as to where this type of family argument might occur in today's times.

  1. Romeo and Juliet are both rebellious because they disobey their parents in a pretty big way, especially at this time in history. Marriage is still a big thing, but in this time the parents got almost all of the say in who you would marry. We don't see much of how Romeo interacts with his parents, but we know that Juliet's parents would rather be happy themselves than see Juliet happy.

    1. Good. Where might we see a similar disobedience in today's world?

  2. The parents in Romeo and Juliet are pretty much enemies towards each other. Juliet's parents are, in my words, stuck up and they don't know what is going through her head. Romeo's parents somewhat understand what he is going through and they don't know yet that he is married to Juliet. Romeo and Juliet are almost rebelling against their parents by marrying people that their families hate. In a modern day world that is kind of rebelling, kind of like when your parent doesn't want you to date someone but you still do. Their parents don't know about this entirely, Juliet's parents don't like it one bit, but there is no comment from Romeo's parents. In today's time, kids may run away because they love someone.

    1. Nice. I think the struggle to express one's independence might have even increased in recent decades. What do you think?

    2. I also think that but sometime people make wrong decisions and by the time they realize that something like running away is wrong, it's to late to be accepted back into society.

  3. Juliet has experienced love and now knows that it is not fair for her parents to decide who she is going to love. In the modern sense they aren't that rebellious. People run off and elope all the time without family members knowing. Nowadays, usually, people get to decide for themselves who they love and are going to spend the rest of their lives with. Romeo and Juliet's parents are angry. How dare they rebel against their word.

    1. Elopement is a popular way to marry in today's world. How do these elopements sometimes spark the same feelings though? Why do people in today's world choose to elope rather than have a traditional wedding?

  4. I feel like Juliet gets along better with the nurse than she does her own parents. They aren't always around like Nurse. Juliet tells Nurse about herself and Romeo, but is hiding it from her parents because of the big rivalry. When her parents tell her she has to marry Paris she is rebellious and says no, but still has yet to tell them about Romeo. She doesn't want to do the sin of having to husbands, but she loves Romeo and not Paris. In today's time the marriage part would be rebellious because you would have to be very sneaky about it if you are underage.

    1. We have laws in our society which establish marriage. Could our parents (in America) force us to marry someone? How about in another culture?

      Delete
    2. In our country, no. Your parents can give you their opinions, but cannot force you to marry someone. It is not legal in Iowa to marry someone unless you are over the age of 18 without parents consent. I honestly don't think our parents today would make us marry someone anyways. In another culture it may be different. You would have to research depending on the area.

    1. So how is this stark contrast demonstrative of the different roles parents can play? How do most parents in today's setting act? More like Juliet's or more like Romeo's?

  6. The relationships between the parents and children In Romeo and Juliet are very strict. The parents basically control everything and if you disobey, your basically a lost cause. Juliet acts like a daddy's girl but when she is told to marry Paris she gets mad at him for the first time which made him want to slap her. Romeo acts respectful to his parents to but he is also disobeying them by loving Juliet. Romeo and Juliet are rebellious in the modern sense because both there parents wouldn't allow them to get married if they knew. An example of a family argument today would be if a girls parents doesn't like her boyfriend because he may have a bad reputation same as vice versa.

    1. The reputation discussion is a very nice comparison. After all, what do Juliet's parents base their not liking Romeo on? Is it truly because of something Romeo did in the beginning? How does their hatred lead to more difficulties?

  7. It seems like Romeo and Juliet have always obeyed there parents. But when they got married without there parents permission, they got into a lot of trouble. What makes their relationship even worse is that both families don't like each other.

    1. Explain your thoughts on how they "got into a lot of trouble". We haven't seen any repercussions yet, right? Include more discussion on the comparison to today's parents and situations that would cause distress.

  8. The argument would end up in shame in the entire family as the consequence. Another example would be personal or social problems between other people they meet, like what people say about you and how you handle it. Juliet's position thoroughly explains the story's future and she will get what she wants, just like modern time.

  9. they both are rebellious because they are meant to be mortal enemies. but juliet is more rebellious she disagreed for her to marry paris. For Romeo barely has any scenes with his parents but I think his parents don't agree on his marriage with Juliet.

Why do we see more of Juliet and her family disputes? Was the role of women more subservient than today? Would Romeo's family have much say in the marriage?

    2. We here about Juliet more because it back then girls didn't have to a chose to get married. I think that Romeo's parents would mind because Juliet is their mortal enemy.

  10. Juliets relationship with her parents is as of right now is bad.She wants to be with Romeo but her parents want her with Paris. So she argues and her parents call her names and Juliet no longer wants anything to do with her parents. So her relationship is very rebellious and selfish. She does not care about her parents , only Romeo. In the modern sense its kinda normal her only wanting to be with her love , it is just like normal girls today.

    1. I understand your comparison, but would the level to which Juliet and Romeo's relationship reached be likely in today's world? While the roles of men and women have evolved a bit, some things have remained pretty constant. Explain your thoughts more thoroughly.

    2. I don't think that what they did would happen in today's world. If two people loved each other and then they could no longer see each other they might just find somebody else.

  11. The relationship between Juliet's parents and Juliet was better in the beginning of the the story then it is right now in the book. She is not listening to them now because she does not want to marry Paris because she is all ready married to Romeo. Juliet is mad at her parents because they want her to marry Paris. She is also mad at the nurse because she took sides with Juliet's father.

  12. in Romeo and Juliet, Romeo has a good relationship with his father and mother. Even so Romeo still keeps secrets from his parents, he doesn't tell them about Juliet of about Rosaline.

Juliet has a bad relationship with her parents. they don't care what she thinks and she doesn't get any say in who she gets to marry or not marry. Juliet has no relationship with them except the nurse, but she hates her too.

Romeo is very secretive in the beginning. This shows us what about his and his parents' relationship? How do they handle things?

Juliet is openly dismissive of her father's plans. How is she treated as a result?

  13. Juliet interacts with her mother like she doesn't want to speak with her. Although, Juliet loves her father and wants to spend some time with him. Romeo loves his parents and enjoys spending time with them.

    1. OK, so we see there is a level of respect in parent-child relationships, even in this time, but how do these relationships impact how Juliet is allowed to behave? Why is there such a dismissive attitude toward her mother? How/Why does she openly argue with her father? How do we know this is a major disobedience?

Could this same idea be conveyed in some way to a modern situation?

    2. These relationships show that Juliet must be well behaved around her parents. Her mother treated her like a piece of crap and basically sold her like an animal like she wasn't even her daughter. She argues with her father because she doesn't want to be forced to be married to Paris. Refusing marriage was a major thing back then.

  14. Romeo is a disobedient but he is not as disobedient as Juliet because his parents don't really seem to care of what he does but Juliet defies her parents by dating and marrying Romeo and the only thing that was wrong with that was that her family does not get along with his and she is already set up to getting married with someone else.

  15. Romeo and Juliet are both rebellious to their parents. They don't listen to who they want them to marry because they don't think they're right with who they tell them to marry. Juliet is really disobedient, she tells her mom that she doesn't want to marry paris because she doesn't love him. She only wants to marry Romeo and not the other boys that her parents will throw at them. While Romeo's parent's aren't really caring right now who he marries. I'm pretty sure that they would care if he married Juliet. His parent's know that he'll find someone he loves but they're hoping it's sooner than later. He still is disobedient because he didn't tell his parents about his marriage or anything he just did it.

    1. How do we discern the level of disobedience? What might be a comparable offense in today's world?

      Delete
    2. The level of disobedience is depending on when it was and where it was. It is also comparable to how kids today don't listen to their parents and they run around crazy getting pregnant and doing drugs. If kids would listen to their parents they would know that they're trying to help them. They would be better people if they weren't so rebellious. Kids now are really reckless and don't care they just destroy stuff and run away and do whatever she wants.

  16. Romeo and Juliet are both rebellious by disobeying their parents and going out and getting married.Juliet hardly ever talks to her family. Romeo loves spending time with his family. Juliet's parents do not ever listen to her. She said she doesn't want to marry Paris but Lord Capulet is making her marry him.

    1. How do the levels of engagement seem to impact the level of disobedience? Do parent-child relationships work better when they are built upon trust and respect? How does this play out in today's society?

  17. Romeo and Juliet both are rebellious to there parents because of their forbidden love. In reality they aren't allowing it because of there family fee they hate each other. Now a days people in relationships run away if they can't be together or sometimes the parents don't even care who they love .Juliet tells her mother she doesn't love that guy Paris and doesn't want to marry him. Her mom is obviously mad.

Romeo and Juliet are both rebellious because they both know that their parents wouldn’t approve of them being together, and Juliet’s parents are very mad, which is understandable because they already had a different guy for her to marry.

    1. Does this still happen today? When we know our parents might not approve of our choices, do we try to sneak around to do things? What is the typical repercussion for this sneaking behavior? How/Why do parents typically find out?
